Honeywell Aerospace provides critical avionics, flight controls, and sensors for autonomous flight, including advanced air mobility and military applications, by leveraging its expertise in components like inertial measurement units, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and air data systems to enable reliable navigation and flight control in uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs)The company partners on projects to develop autonomous capabilities for various aircraft, including both military and civilian platforms. It offers data analytics and flight planning services through its Honeywell Forge platform, aiming to improve operational efficiency and provide real-time performance data for autonomous systems.
Honeywell's Role:
  • Expertise in Core Components:
Honeywell offers high-performance navigation systems and sensors, including inertial measurement units (IMUs), accelerometers, gyroscopes, and air data sensors, which are crucial for drone flight control.
  • Partnerships for Autonomous Development:
Honeywell collaborates with other companies and research groups to develop and integrate autonomous capabilities into various aircraft, including military and civil applications.
  • Data and Software Solutions:
The Honeywell Forge platform provides advanced data analytics, flight planning, and real-time performance monitoring for autonomous operations.
  • Key Technologies and Applications
  • Autonomy for Military and Civilian Drones:
Honeywell's technologies are applied to power the autonomous operation of drones and other advanced air mobility vehicles.
  • Advanced Air Mobility (AAM):
The company supplies engines, electric power systems, and other avionics for future AAM aircraft, which often feature autonomous capabilities.
  • Flight Control Systems:
Honeywell's experience in flight controls and avionics helps ensure safe and precise autonomous flight for a wide range of unmanned systems.
Honeywell's contributions to the MQ-9 Reaper
      Propulsion
  • Engine: The MQ-9 Reaper is powered by the Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprop engine, which is flight-certified and provides 900 shaft horsepower.
  • Fuel Efficiency: The TPE331-10 is equipped with a Digital Electronic Engine Control (DEEC), which significantly enhances engine performance and fuel efficiency, particularly at lower altitudes.
  • Extended Range: This engine is a key factor in the Reaper's long endurance, which can last for over 27 hours in standard configurations.
  •     Avionics and flight systems
  • Navigation: Honeywell equips the drone with advanced inertial navigation systems, which include an embedded GPS/INS unit. These systems deliver precise and independent inertial position information for navigation, targeting, and attitude reference.
  • Electrical Power: Honeywell has continuously evolved the electrical power equipment it provides for the Reaper. The latest generation of its starter generator and power converter products is smaller, lighter, and more reliable than previous versions.
  • Flight Control: The drone is equipped with flight control actuators from Honeywell, which act as a "nervous system." These actuators convert electrical commands into mechanical force to adjust the aircraft's primary flight surfaces, such as flaps.
